Some Alternative Terraces and Rooftop Spots to Checkout While Nali Patio is Closed - The Beijinger

One of my favorite things about Nali Patio was its numerous rooftop terraces and bars -- from El Bario’s rooftop to Mosto’s small terrace on the side -- it was sure to be a great spot come summertime. So now that Nali Patio is currently closed for the time being, here are few other of the capital’s best rooftops and terraces for you to enjoy.
Situated in the heart of the CBD, surrounded by some of Beijing’s tallest buildings, the China World Summit Wing’s sixth-floor rooftop really does earn its nickname the “Secret Garden”. Transformed into the Tiki Terrace for summer, it offers up Pacific Ocean vibes with a Tiki cocktail list and a selection of Hawaiian appetizers and light BBQ bites. The spacious rooftop has plenty of greenery and elegant water features, creating a relaxed atmosphere that will make it hard to believe you’re in the middle of Guomao. 

Tiki Terrace

Opening times: Monday to Friday 5pm - 9pm, Saturday and Sunday 2pm – 9pm
Just north of Houhai lies this relatively new spot, having only opened in 2021, Hutong bar. Its large rooftop offers up spectacular views of Beijing’s hutongs including the Bell and Drum Towers and is a particularly great spot to enjoy during sunset. The blue and white color scheme and tiled floor give the rooftop a Mediterranean feel that is quite reminiscent of Nali Patio. They offer up a range of classic and special cocktails, along with some of your usual Western fare like burgers, tacos, pasta and more.

With a growing number of branches in Beijing, it can be hard to decide just which of Jing-A’s locations to visit. However, if you’re looking to sip on one of their signature beers while basking in some sun look no further than their 798 location. Opening earlier this year in January, now that summer is well underway patrons can make full use of the rooftop bar. Along with views of the Art District they of course are also offering up their usual range of beers and an extensive food menu which includes some great sharing platters.

Another relative new comer to the capital, opening up about a year ago, is Lenbach Roof. As you can guess from the name, the main focus of this Lenbach location just by Chongwenmen station, is their impressively large rooftop. With a bright, turquoise color scheme, yellow umbrellas and plenty of greenery this rooftop oozes fresh, summer vibes. Like their original location at The Place they serve up a range of German classics and have several German beers on tap to wash it all down with.

Not to be confused with the Opposite House’s Frasca, Fresco is hidden away right by where Liangma River ends in the south. This steak and seafood house’s elegant terrace is set with chic furnishings and is absolutely bursting with greenery. Up on the fifth floor you get great views of Dongzhimen and being west facing, it’s perfect for the evening if you want to enjoy a beautiful sunset as you dine. Along with their fine dining menu, they usually also have seasonal specials available and also a number of great set menu deals, which you can check out on Dianping.

Antiques: Portrait, vintage hats, clocks and watches at auction in Carrigtwohill - Irish Examiner

A stylish portrait requiring further research, a 19th-century walnut carved bench with a motto we could all adopt, vintage hats in their original Munster Arcade boxes, a clock carved with the Cork coat of arms and a valuable Patek Philippe wristwatch will contribute to an interesting sale at Lynes & Lynes next Saturday (September 10).
Viewing gets underway in Carrigtwohill today for an auction made up of contents from Ballynoe House, Rushbrooke, Cobh, and from a large Cork city residence, along with items from several individual clients.
The most expensively estimated lot is the Patek Philippe Nautilus automatic gentleman’s wristwatch from Ballynoe House, which has recently been sold.
It is estimated at a cool €30,000-€50,000 and auctioneer Denis Lynes reckons that it could well exceed the top figure.
A 19th-century walnut-carved long hall bench with a central heraldic shield from Ballynoe is estimated at €1,000-€1,500.

It is carved with the motto ‘Nun Quam Non Paratus’, meaning Never Unprepared.
A half portrait of a young lady, painted in the style of Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830), bears an Agnews label on the back. In a period frame, it was purchased at the contents auction of Galtee Castle, Co Tipperary, which was demolished circa 1941. The castle was built by the Kingstons around 1780 and re-modelled in 1892 by Abel Buckley, MP of Ryecroft Hall near Manchester.
The venerable firm of Agnews, a leading London Old Master art dealer since 1860, was founded in Manchester in 1817.
Located since 1877 at a prominent 

gallery at Old Bond Street, the firm of Thomas Agnew and Sons closed in 2013 and re-opened at St James’s Place in London. Their archive was given to the National Gallery. The painting is estimated at €1,000-€2,000.
A curiosity of the sale is an oak mantel clock carved on the top with the Cork Coat of Arms. The nautical theme is enhanced with flanking cannons and anchors set on a cushion base with swag decoration. This product of the Cork School of carving is estimated at €300-€500. Of vintage interest is a collection of ladies’ hats in their original Munster Arcade boxes (€50-€80).

A top hat by W. Dennehy and Sons of Patrick Street and Castle Street, Cork (€40-€60) is accompanied by a shooting stick.
The sale kicks off with a pair of Irish Georgian mahogany and brass-bound turf and plate buckets (€600-€1,000) and a large Waterford 10 branch chandelier comes with an estimate of €2,000-€3,000.

A large circular silver salver (€1,000-€1,500) and a five-piece silver tea service (€1,000-€1,500) by Egans of Cork each date to the late 1970s. There is a good selection of silver and jewellery, period and other furniture and a 1989 view of Patrick’s Hill by Desmond Hickey (€400-€600).
Among the garden effects is a Coalbrookdale design fern back garden seat (€600-€800), a pair of wire work roll-back garden chairs (€400-€600), a conversation seat from a design by Charles Young of Edinburgh (€400-€600) and a concrete and cast-iron wellhead (€300-€500). The catalogue for this sale of 354 lots is online.

‘Fixer Upper: The Castle’: Are Chip and Joanna Gaines In Over Their Heads? - Realtor.com News

On their new show “Fixer Upper: The Castle,” Chip and Joanna Gaines are quickly learning that making over a historic building is a lot more complicated than making over any old house.
In the latest episode, “Story of Color,” they struggle specifically with how to blend the castle’s old elements with new ones. There are many tough decisions to be made, and—surprise!—Chip and Jo don’t always agree.

Throughout the season, Chip and Joanna have debated what to do with the castle’s exterior stone. Some of the original stones needed to be replaced, but the new material isn’t a perfect match. Now the “Fixer Upper” hosts need to decide whether they should chemically treat the old stone so the original material looks like the new stuff, or use a composting technique to make the new stone look older.
Joanna admits that she can’t decide, torn between honoring the aged exterior of this old house and making the exterior look fresher and more inviting.
“The stone won’t go away. It keeps haunting me,” she says. “I think it’s like, anytime I leave, I think I’ve made the best, right decision.”

She leaves the choice to Chip, who ultimately makes his decision based on convenience. He explains that aging the new sections is too labor intensive, so he opts for the faster chemical treatment that’ll make the old stone look new.
When the stone is done, both Joanna and Chip are thrilled. The castle looks fresher, while the cleaner stone honors the old home’s classic style. It shows that when giving a home a historic look, renovators don’t always need to choose finishes that look old. Sometimes it’s even better to make an old build look the way it might have when it was new.

While Chip and Joanna decide to give the exterior a fresher look, they want to make sure the interior walls have classic colors. Joanna creates 10 custom colors for the house, including a light pink for a space she imagines will be a girl’s bedroom.
“I love it ’cause it’s not trendy pink. It’s like a dusty pink,” she says. “It’s beautiful. It’s historic.”

In one of the bathrooms, Joanna plans to line the walls with panels of 6-by-12-inch Cararra marble with the same material (though in a hexagonal pattern) on the floor.
“I wanted to do the Carrara marble throughout the bathroom just to keep it really timeless and classic,” she says. “But also just wanted a little something that had a different design and even color in it.”
To get that color, Joanna selects a different kind of tile with blue and white tones. This tile, as the Magnolia designer tells Chip, will go on the wall behind the sink, giving the space a color accent.

“Back in our day, when we would talk to clients, you would say something to the effect of ‘You’d really want that to pop,'” Chip teases. These days, Chips says clients would describe memorable features as “spicy.”
No matter the lingo, it’s clear that this tile combo is the right choice. It’s classic like the rest of the home, but it still looks clean and new, exactly what homeowners want in a bathroom.

Probably the biggest tussle between this couple has to do with the floors. Joanna wants the home’s wood flooring to be dark, but Chip disagrees.
“I prefer light, but you always prefer dark,” he points out.
Joanna argues that she likes light floors, but a natural wood look wouldn’t look right in this house, especially when the walls are so dark.
“When you walk down here, all of these walls are dark wood. If I step into a space and all the walls are dark and then the floor is light, it’s like, it makes my heart feel upside down,” she explains.

In the end, Joanna wins—and together, the partners prove just how difficult it can be to pick the right floor. They remind viewers that both light finishes and dark finishes can look great, but either way, it’s important to consider the style and era of the rest of the house.

While an old house is sure to come with plenty of character and historic details, this building is fairly empty. They’ll need to add some of that classic charm back into the space. One way they do that is by installing big, built-in bookshelves with an old-fashioned style.
“People love things that are nostalgic, they love things that are antique-looking, and I want this place to feel like it did in 1915,” Joanna says. “So whether you walked into the space in 1915 or today, it has that same feeling of history and love and beauty and castle-ship.”
The bookcase ends up looking gorgeous, and it serves as a smart reminder that not every old home will come with lots of charming details. Sometimes, homeowners will need to add those in.
