Master Gardener Program of Wake County Receives Grant to Help Grow Better, More Bountiful Gardens - Wake County Government

Harnessing the power of the sun to grow big, beautiful blooms is no easy task, even for the members of the NC State Extension Master Gardener program of Wake County. To help, they’ve received a $500 grant from the N.C. Extension Master Gardener Volunteer Association (NCEMGVA) to buy a Solar Path Finder to aid in garden planning.
A Solar Path Finder enables a gardener to properly determine how much sun different areas of the garden receive, so they can optimize planting choices. The new tool will be available to Extension Master Gardener students and Master Gardener Volunteers, as they work on community and other local gardens.
“Gardeners are optimists and often believe their gardens get more sun than they actually do,” said Louise Romanow, master gardener volunteer with the Wake County program. “We see this as a great learning tool for students and others, whether planning a garden or ascertaining why plants are not performing optimally.”
The Master Gardener volunteers of Wake County are excited about the opportunity to use this device and thank the NCEMGVA for the award.
Formed in 1991, the NCEMGVA inspires, connects and empowers its members as Extension Master Gardener Volunteers. They offer grants to county programs, continuing education and opportunities to network. They also publish a quarterly newsletter, featuring upcoming events, features and other items of interest, with the goal of letting volunteers know about events taking place across the state.
The NC State Extension Master Gardener program of Wake County is part of the NC Cooperative Extension – Wake County Center. This center works to improve the lives, land and economy of all people in Wake County.

MILAN (AP) — Much of the attention will be focused off the field when Monza takes on defending champion AC Milan in Serie A on Saturday.
There will be familiar faces in the directors’ box at San Siro as Silvio Berlusconi and Adriano Galliani return to the club they led to 29 trophies in 31 years.
Berlusconi bought Monza in 2018 and installed Adriano Galliani as CEO — reuniting the duo that found success at Milan until Berlusconi sold the Rossoneri in 2017.
“It will be hard to go to the right locker room,” Galliani said.
“I’m doing mental yoga now because I will have the cameras on me for 90 minutes. I’ve been working for a few days to be immune to any emotion, or at least to try. I will let myself go from the next match, I can’t do it in Milan-Monza.
“I hope to be able to stay still and motionless no matter what happens on the field, every time the referee blows his whistle, I will not move anything.”
After a poor start to its first ever season in the Italian top-flight, Monza has hauled itself out of the bottom three with a run that was sparked by an improbable win over Juventus, in coach Raffaele Palladino's first match in charge.
It’s a far cry from when 86-year-old Berlusconi and 78-year-old Galliani first took control of Monza, with the club languishing in the third division.
But Galliani, who was born in the city of Monza, revealed in an interview with DAZN that even that was emotional.
“After the period at Milan," Galliani said, "some Serie C presidents would say to me, ‘How can you come to these stadiums after you’ve spent your life at Camp Nou or Santiago Bernabeu?’ Monza is the team of my heart and of my city, the team that I have supported since I was five. This is the dream of my life: Whether it is in Serie D, C, B or A does not detract anything from my passion.
“Serie A, of course, is something incredible, but my passion is independent of the league we’re in. When I see that Milan, Monza, Napoli are on the same list of teams in the league, I still don’t believe it. It is a lifelong dream that has come true.”
Monza lost its first five matches in Serie A before picking up its first point, so it was little surprise when the club fired coach Giovanni Stroppa. Eyebrows were raised, however, when it was announced that his replacement would be youth squad coach Palladino, who had never managed a team in a senior match.
But Monza followed up that historic win over Juventus with two more victories — without conceding a goal — before losing at Empoli 1-0 last weekend. It also beat in-form Udinese in the Italian Cup on Wednesday.
“He (Palladino) did well with the junior teams, then with the under-19 squad, and the president and I thought he could also do it in the first team,” Galliani said. “Nine points in four matches, but let’s not say anything . . ."
Monza has climbed to 14th place, five points above the relegation zone. Milan is third and would top Serie A with a win as Napoli and Atalanta do not play until Sunday.
“The important thing is not to finish in the bottom three,” Galliani said. “It is the first year ever in Serie A.
“Milan-Monza at San Siro ... Serie A ... for me it is a dream, it is my life that will be in front of me on Saturday evening.”

Red Sauce Pizza's Shardell Dues Shares Her Go-To Portland Restaurants - Eater Portland

Filed under:
The Northeast Portland pizza maven’s delivery standbys, neighborhood favorites, and date night essential
Welcome to Dining Confidential, a monthly column in which local chefs talk about their favorite places in Portland, highlighting their own restaurant’s ethos, sharing fun personal takes, and fostering a community spirit. Know of a chef you’d like to see featured? Let us know via our tip line.
Shardell Dues of Red Sauce Pizza likes to keep her eponymous sauce as simple and high-quality as possible. “We don’t really do much to it,” says Dues. “We use a good canned tomato, herbs, some sea salt, some fresh garlic.” This philosophy extends to nearly everything else on the menu — “Really good cheese, good flour, Revel Meat’s summer sausage all-beef pepperoni. We smoke our own Canadian bacon, grind down pork butts and make sausage, use local farms for the salads, we like to try to do it all.”
Eater: There are a lot of specialty pizza people who are like “I make 20 pies a night and then I’m done.” But one look at your menu and you can tell that’s not the case here.
Shardell Dues: We’re doing about 150 to 200 pizzas a night.
That’s a huge accomplishment.
We’re a busy restaurant. We do a lot of DoorDash delivery, we’ve got the patio. We’re not doing indoor dining right now, but we don’t need to — it’s just too risky right now. I leave it to the staff. Who wants to be scared of work? I don’t want people to have anxiety, I don’t wanna be the person that does that. Sometimes chefs are really serious. It feels like such serious business, even though it’s not. It’s not fair for people to be in panic mode and not enjoy their shift.
It’s good to go to a restaurant where happy people work. Also, it’s good to go to a pizza place where I can feel not-embarrassed about eating pizza with pineapple, because you have two! That makes me feel good.
I love pineapple. I’m obsessed with pineapple. I know people like to have a lot of opinions…
So, where are some of your favorite places to go out?
I feel like I haven’t gone out dining in two years.
What are the places that are so in your groove, in your routine, that you don’t even think of it as going out?
Nong’s Khao Man Gai is my go-to delivery order. I love their coconut soft serve. I love DoorDash-ing sweet-and-sour chicken and mushroom fried rice from Eem. It’s pretty economical; even with delivery fee and tip it feeds two people for like forty bucks. On DoorDash? Even with all the fees? That’s a steal.
Where do you eat in your neighborhood?
If I wanna go out for some drinks with my friends, Hi-Top Tavern down the street has an amazing patio, pretty good nachos, and great margaritas. I like that spot Peter’s Bar & Grill on the corner up there, it’s just a little dive bar-meets-Red Robin kind of vibe: chill for older or younger people. They’ve got a great burger and tater tots.
What’s your coffee standby?
I’m big on coffee; gotta have two a day. Guilder is the best. They roast their beans in-house and it’s special, it’s just not like any other. They’re doing affogato right now too, with a little scoop of ice cream. Bison Coffeehouse is a Native American-owned coffee shop on Cully Boulevard and their coffee is wonderful. They offer you the choice of light, medium, or dark roast and Loretta bakes all the pastries in house. Don’t skip the coffee cake or bison sugar cookie.
What are your favorite spots for lunch?
I started doing this strength weight training and I’m so fucking hungry, I really need a burrito and I really don’t wanna be disappointed for my lunch. My go-to is Loncheria Los Mayas on Prescott; I go there probably two or three times a week. I get the chicken burrito, extra sour cream, no lettuce. Or, I get the cochinita pibil, a very slow-cooked pork shoulder. Their sauces are full of flavor, they salt everything, it’s amazing. The family that runs it takes the weekends off. They do it right.
Where do you go for comfort food?
XLB, that’s my comfort food. The Shanghai pork and shrimp noodles, their dumplings, the bao buns are just so comforting to me. I love that place, and I feel like it’s underrated. Also, Rangoon Bistro – the chicken danbauk and pork & pickled mango curry are to die for.
What about late-night drinks?
Expatriate is my favorite. I’m not a heavy drinker, but if I go there, I’ll have three cocktails. The Burmese tea salad is so fresh, the textures and the crunch — on a hot day you wanna eat that. I always order the cheeseburger and fries. It’s a really fun date night spot.
And what’s for dessert?
I’m such a chocolate person. Papa Hadyn has the best German chocolate cake in town, they’re classic. Kee’s #Loaded Kitchen is amazing, she does a lot for our community. She makes bomb banana pudding and 7 Up cake. She can cook on such a large scale, I’m like, “How the fuck do you even do that?” It’s hard to cook in a cart, period. I’ve got, like, two buildings and a patio and it’s hard.

Legendary Latin Guitarist Antonio Rey Comes to Santa Barbara - Santa Barbara Independent

One of Spain’s Best Guitarist-Composers to Delight Flamenco Fans
Flamenco music and dance fans are in for a history-making special treat this weekend. International flamenco superstar Antonio Rey, one of Spain’s best guitarists and composers, will perform in Santa Barbara for the first time on Sunday, September 11.
Rey says this is a don’t-miss event “because it will be a night of flamenco in its pure state.” He will play his own compositions from his 2020 album Flamenco Sin Fronteras, which won a Latin Grammy. In addition, he will play songs from prior albums such as Camino Al Alma and Colores Del Fuego.
Guitarist José Tanaka, percussionist Diego Alvarez (a master cajón player), and dancer Maria Bermudez will join Rey on stage at The New Vic. They are all close friends and have performed together a number of times.
Bermudez, a flamenco artist, director, choreographer, and teacher who runs the Maria Bermudez Flamenco Performing Arts Studio in downtown Santa Barbara, is particularly excited about the event. More than 30 years ago she moved to Jerez de la Frontera (recognized as the birthplace of flamenco) to immerse herself in the art form “full-on.” Now a master of the region’s complex and intricate dance style, she still lives there part-time. She has performed at many legendary venues, including the Hollywood Bowl, Lope de Vega in Seville, Lincoln Center in New York, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. She says it’s a privilege to perform with Rey, Tanaka, and Alvarez. “They are consummate artists. We all share our love for flamenco; it’s what we do; it’s our lifeline.”

“I’m proud to be working together to bring an artist like Antonio to Santa Barbara together with the Flamenco Arts Festival,” says Mitch Chang (founder and owner of the Los Angeles Flamenco Festival, Kala Koa Entertainment, and Mitch Chang Mortgage), who is producing the show in partnership with Santa Barbara’s nonprofit Flamenco Arts Festival. A fan of the S.B. festival from the beginning, Chang says, “It was a beautiful opportunity to experience so many incredible artists that have since gone on to become legendary. Those concerts will forever hold a place in my heart, and it is my wish that Santa Barbara locals will likewise walk away from this performance with their own special memories and a newfound thirst for discovering flamenco music and artists, both past and present.”
Since its debut in 2000, the Flamenco Arts Festival usually happens every September, but the pandemic forced a pause in programming. Vibiana Pizano, the festival’s founder and president, explains that they instead launched a virtual event in April 2022 called Flamenco on Film, with eight different films showcasing various artists performing from Spain and in Santa Barbara.
“Now, we are planning our return to live programming and hope to make an announcement in early 2023,” says Pizano. She adds, “This concert is important because it helps to promote flamenco music, which is a priority for the Flamenco Arts Festival. Our goal is to increase the knowledge, interest, and understanding of flamenco in our community not just through dance events, but also through music concerts.”
Antonio Rey performs at The New Vic (33 W. Victoria St.) Sunday, September 11, at 7 p.m. For tickets, call (805) 965-5400 or visit store.ensembletheatre.com/events.
